![]() At least a quarter of the building will be used by the school, which will create hubs centered on different sectors of the tech industry. ![]() The 200,000 square foot structure, located directly across from the academic building, will include co-location office space and office suites for use by everything from tech startups to the research arms of global companies. The first phase of construction will include four buildings: A sprawling academic facility, a residential apartment building for students and faculty, a hotel and conference center (which may not be ready by the 2017 opening) and, lastly, a mixed-use building that will be occupied both by the school and by industry. “They tend to be off to the side, right? Not at the heart and center of campus. “There are a lot of campuses around the country-let’s say a handful-that have started to create business parks or other sorts of industrial or research academic facilities associated with the campus,” says Andrew Winters, Cornell Tech’s director of capital projects and a former member of the Bloomberg administration. It will eventually be built up, over several phases and decades, into a $2 billion facility where, ideally, students and entrepreneurs will brush shoulders daily, sharing space for learning and creating. By 2017, a large part of the southern end will be remade as one of the most modern academic settings in the nation, home to Cornell Tech, a graduate program built around the intersection of technology and business. Today, yet again, Roosevelt Island is in transition. And, for the small number who have lived in the Islands middle part, it was just their neighborhood. Later, it would be used by New Yorkers, for far too many years, as a place for castaways from the diseased to the mentally ill to the “criminally insane.” Later, it became a center of healing, host to Goldwater and Coler hospitals. ![]() In the 19th century, prisoners lived there and toiled away in an island quarry, freedom within sight, but never within grasp. Some had the grimmest of stories to tell. ![]() Over the years it has been a home to people from countless walks of life, with all sorts of reasons for being there. A sliver of land as wide as one avenue block and planted squarely in the middle of the river, it has had many different names over the last millennium: Minnehanak, Varckens, Manning’s Island, Welfare Island and, for more than two centuries, Blackwell’s Island. ![]()
